Dr. Guillermo R. Valdes has been appointed Dean of Nursing at Miami Regional University (MRU). He has been a clinical and academic nursing leader in the South Florida Community for over three decades. He comes with an intensive nursing history of clinical practice leadership, organizational learning and development, and academic administrative experiences in public service. Dr. Valdes supports relationship- based philosophy encouraging academic achievement by fostering student-centered learning in a supportive competency- based education milieu. Dr. Valdes as a pioneer Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), graduated from Chatham University in 2008, later specializing in nursing education at Duke University School of Nursing. He is board certified in Medical Surgical Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is a Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse by the Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board.
Dr. Valdes has received numerous accolades for his dedication to professional nursing, including nominated as “US Professor of the Year” Carnegie Foundation in 2015, recognized for consistently promoting an environment of nursing excellence by the Florida Nurses Association (FNA), and by the Florida Center for Nursing as a nurse leader in 2016. Most recently, Dr. Valdes was the recipient of the FNA ICON Award “Mentor Role Model” Icon category for his contributions to the nursing profession. As a Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Virginia Henderson Fellow, Dr. Valdes supports nursing research and evidence-based practice with a strong commitment to recognizing nurses as leaders. Dr. Valdes is an active member of the American Nurses Association, Florida Nurses Association, South Region Leadership Committee, Advisory Board Member for the Haitian American Nurses Association, past president- elect of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Miami- Chapter and a member of the Black Nurses Association, National and Miami Chapter. As the Dean of Nursing at MRU, Dr. Valdes will focus on advocating for transformational leadership, a quality- competency- based supportive learning environment and professional development with inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunities.
