MRU Family Comes Together to Fight Childhood Cancer and #LiveLikeBella

This past weekend Miami Regional University staff, faculty, and students attended a great cause at Miami Zoo in support of Bella and other children.

Bella Rodriguez-Torres is the oldest daughter of Shannah and Raymond. Despite having developmental delays from low oxygen at birth, she was a healthy and happy four year old until July 2007, when she became paralyzed overnight. The cause of the paralysis was a large tumor in her spine with seven other tumors throughout her body. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive childhood cancer. In honor of Bella, who lived life to the fullest, her mother challenged everyone to Live Like Bella. The phrase #LiveLikeBella “went viral.” It was seen on buildings, overpasses, homes, cars and even government buildings. #LiveLikeBella circulated the globe with tweets, media posts, tags, and mentions.
Today Live Like Bella stands as an innovative pediatric cancer research foundation and provides support for families with children in treatment. Their goal is to make pediatric cancer a curable and treatable disease.
